VanEck has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to withdraw its proposed Lido Staked Ethereum ETF. The firm filed the request on October 14, 2026, nearly a year after it first registered the fund. The product never launched.
The withdrawal appears in a Form RW filed under Rule 477 of the Securities Act, logged by the SEC as file number 333-290918. VanEck Vice President Matthew A. Babinsky signed it. The form gives one reason, and barely that: the sponsor "does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution" of the fund's shares.
What VanEck filed
VanEck first registered the fund in October 2025 and filed its S-1 on October 16 that year. The paperwork sat for almost a year. The SEC never declared it effective, so no shares were ever issued. None will be now.
A Form RW is the plain way to pull a registration before it clears. It does not need the SEC's sign-off. The agency never ruled on the Lido fund either way. VanEck did not say what changed its mind, and it did not say whether it will try again with a different product.
What the fund would have held
The ETF would have held staked Ether (stETH), not Ether (ETH) itself. stETH is a token issued by Lido, a service that stakes Ether for its users and passes on the network's staking rewards. Holders earn the yield without running a validator of their own. That was the pitch.
By wrapping stETH in a fund, VanEck wanted to hand that yield to brokerage investors who never open a crypto wallet, the same convenience that draws people to a spot ETF over buying coins directly. The fund planned to track the MarketVector Lido Staked Ethereum Benchmark Rate. It would have been the first US ETF tied to Lido's liquid staking token.
How much to read into it
One pulled filing is thin evidence of anything. VanEck gave no reason, and the SEC issued no rejection, so the record shows a business decision and little else.
Staking products carry wrinkles a plain spot fund avoids: staking lock-ups, validator risk, and the tax treatment of rewards. A sponsor can weigh all that and decide the numbers do not add up yet. Whether VanEck comes back with a reworked version is the open question. For now the firm has said nothing beyond the filing.
What to watch
Watch for a replacement filing. A fresh S-1 with different mechanics would show VanEck still wants the category, just not this design. Watch the SEC too. The agency is still shaping how staking fits inside regulated funds, and that will matter more to the category than any single withdrawal. Nothing here is a verdict on staking ETFs. It is one firm pulling one product.
Frequently asked
Did the VanEck Lido Staked Ethereum ETF ever trade?
No. It never launched. The SEC never declared its registration effective, so no shares were issued or sold. VanEck filed a Form RW on October 14, 2026 to withdraw the registration it first submitted in October 2025. The plan is off, and nothing was ever listed.
Why did VanEck withdraw the filing?
VanEck did not give a reason. The Form RW states only that the sponsor does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution of shares. The SEC did not reject the fund. VanEck has not said whether it will refile a changed version, so the motive is not public.
What is stETH, the token the fund would have held?
stETH is a liquid staking token from Lido. When someone stakes Ether through Lido, they receive stETH in return, and it accrues the network's staking rewards. The token can be traded or used elsewhere while the underlying Ether stays staked. The VanEck fund planned to hold stETH, not Ether directly.
