Lisk shuts down its Ethereum layer-2 chain after a decade
Lisk closed its Ethereum layer-2 chain on 2 November 2026 after close to a decade, moved the LSK token fully onto Ethereum, and reinvented itself as a payments platform for businesses. Coins left on the old chain face a manual claims process no earlier than January 2027.

Lisk shut down its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain on 2 November 2026, closing a network it had run for close to a decade and remaking the company as a payments platform for businesses.
In a company blog post and its support pages, Lisk confirmed the closure. User-facing services went first, the Lisk Portal and the Lisk Bridge among them, before the rest of the chain was switched off. The crypto news site PANews reported the same date and the same order on 3 November.
Lisk is not a newcomer. The project is about a decade old, according to Crypto Briefing, and spent most of that time running its own blockchain before moving onto Ethereum as a layer 2. The move was recent. Old balances were snapshotted at block 24,823,618 in May 2024 for a one-for-one swap into the token that now carries the Lisk name.
What Lisk switched off
The shutdown ran in stages. First the parts people touched. Then the chain beneath them. Once the Bridge closed, there was no supported way to move LSK off the Lisk Chain and onto Ethereum, so anyone who had not already moved was out of luck.
What Lisk did say is blunt. It has not put a figure on the value sitting on the chain when it closed, and it has not given a user count. Recovery of assets left behind, it warned, cannot be guaranteed.
The token that outlived the chain
LSK did not die with the chain. It now lives only on Ethereum, where Lisk describes it as a loyalty token with a total supply of 300 million and zero inflation. From 2027, the company says, businesses will earn and spend LSK on the new platform.
Holders of the old Lisk coin had until 21 May 2026 to claim their one-for-one swap. Coins nobody claimed by then were burned. The legacy records still exist as a read-only history, useful for looking but useless for claiming anything now.
A second burn comes with the shutdown. About 5.2 million LSK sitting in the staking rewards pool will be destroyed, covering rewards that were never assigned and rewards earned but never collected. Coins that users actively staked are safe. That step follows a much larger burn in September, when 100 million LSK left the project treasury and cut the maximum supply from 400 million to 300 million.
Coins left on the old chain
For anyone who left LSK behind, the way back is narrow. Lisk plans a manual claims process in January 2027 and has promised more detail when it opens. Until then, those balances are frozen in place.
Picture a bank that closes a branch and tells customers the vault will reopen for pickups in two months, maybe. That is roughly where stranded LSK holders sit. The difference is that a bank must account for every deposit, and a closed blockchain does not.
There is a plain lesson in that for any holder. The safest way to carry a token through a shutdown is to hold it yourself, in self-custody, on a chain that is staying open, and to act well before the final deadline rather than on it.
Why a layer 2 gives up
Running a layer 2 costs real money. Someone pays for the sequencer that orders transactions, the engineers who keep it safe, and the rewards that draw users in. The money is meant to come back as fees. On most layer 2s those fees are deliberately tiny, which is the attraction for users and the trap for whoever runs the network.
Lisk's founder, Max Kordek, tied the change to banking rather than to gas receipts. The new platform grew out of repeated trouble with banking relationships, cross-border payments, compliance, and the split between fiat and stablecoin balances, according to Crypto Briefing. The product now on offer is a single workspace for accounts, payments, and approvals, with support for fiat and stablecoins in more than 100 countries.
That is a crowded corner to walk into. Plenty of companies already sell cross-border payment rails and stablecoin tools to businesses, most of them without a defunct blockchain in their past. Lisk's wager is that a known name and a surviving token give it a way in. Whether buyers care is an open question.
Read quickly, this is just another crypto project dying. That reading is too tidy. Closing a chain that cannot pay for itself, out in the open, with a date and a burn schedule attached, is rarer than quietly letting one rot. It is still a failure of the first plan. It is just an honest one.
What to watch next
Three things stand out. Whether the January 2027 claims process returns stranded coins, and how many. Whether the new platform lands paying customers rather than announcements. And whether other layer 2s follow Lisk toward the exit, because the math that caught it, heavy running costs set against thin fees, is not unique to Lisk.
Frequently asked
Is the LSK token gone now that the Lisk Chain has closed?
No. Only the Lisk Chain closed. LSK now lives on Ethereum as a loyalty token, with a fixed supply of 300 million and zero inflation. Lisk says businesses will start earning and spending it on the new platform in 2027.
What happens to LSK left on the old Lisk Chain?
The Lisk Portal and Lisk Bridge are closed, so there is no live way to move those coins now. Lisk plans a manual claims process in January 2027 but warns that recovery of stranded assets cannot be guaranteed, so holders who missed the migration face a wait with no promise at the end.
Why did Lisk shut down its blockchain?
Lisk is repositioning as a payments platform for businesses. Its founder, Max Kordek, pointed to repeated trouble with banking relationships and cross-border payments rather than any single technical fault, according to Crypto Briefing. Only the chain closed. The LSK token and the company continue.
