Hot wallet or cold wallet: which one should actually hold your crypto
Every crypto wallet is either connected to the internet or it is not, and that single fact decides most of your risk. Here is the difference between hot and cold storage, and how to match the wallet to the job.

Strip away the branding and every crypto wallet falls into one of two camps. A hot wallet is connected to the internet. A cold wallet is not. That single distinction decides most of your security, and it is the thing wallet marketing tends to blur.
Understanding it is the difference between choosing storage on purpose and hoping for the best.
Hot wallets: convenient and exposed
A hot wallet, a phone or browser app, or the balance you keep on an exchange, is always reachable, which makes it easy to spend and easy to attack. Because the keys touch an internet-connected device, a remote attacker who compromises that device or the platform can move the funds. That is not a rare edge case: the steady stream of hot-wallet hacks at exchanges and gambling platforms, where attackers gain control of the keys and drain the wallets in minutes, is exactly this failure mode.
“A hot wallet is built for convenience. Convenience is the same thing as exposure.”
Cold wallets: safe and deliberate
A cold wallet keeps the keys offline, most often on a dedicated hardware device that signs transactions without the keys ever leaving it. That makes it far harder to attack remotely, at the cost of convenience: you have to physically confirm actions, and you carry the responsibility for the device and its recovery phrase. For anything you are not actively trading, that trade-off is usually worth it.
How to match the wallet to the job
The sensible split mirrors how you treat cash: a little in your pocket, the rest in a safe. Keep spending money in a hot wallet or on a reputable exchange, and hold long-term savings in cold storage whose keys are yours, which is the heart of self-custody. Whichever you use, the recovery phrase is the real prize, so guard it accordingly.
Our take
There is no single best wallet, only the right wallet for the amount and the purpose. Hot for what you spend, cold for what you save, and never more on any connected platform than you would be comfortable losing to a bad day. This is information, not investment advice.
