Ethena to back USDe with tokenized stocks on Binance, ENA rises
Ethena said on 25 September 2026 it will hold Binance bStocks as collateral for USDe and short equity futures against them. The move takes its basis trade beyond crypto for the first time, and ENA rose sharply.

Ethena said on Friday it will back its synthetic dollar USDe (USDE) with tokenized U.S. stocks held on Binance, the first time the trade has reached beyond crypto. USDe holds about $4.9 billion. Its ENA token jumped.
Details came in a press release issued by the company on 25 September 2026, and both The Block and Unchained reported them that day. Guy Young, founder of Ethena Labs, said it was the most significant expansion of USDe's funding mechanism since the project started. USDe is a synthetic dollar. It tries to hold near $1 without parking cash in a bank, by owning collateral and running short futures against it to cancel out price swings. Ethena has kept that trade inside crypto until now, mostly by shorting bitcoin and ether futures against spot holdings.
How the tokenized stock trade works
Ethena runs a basis trade. It holds an asset and sells a matching futures contract, so the two moves cancel and the protocol keeps the funding fee that short-term traders pay to hold their positions. Those assets were crypto only. The new leg uses bStocks, Binance tokens that each track one U.S. share and, by the exchange's own account, are backed one for one by stock kept in custody. Think of it as owning a share and betting against it at the same time, then keeping the small fee gap between the two.
To hedge those bStocks, Ethena shorts Binance equity perpetual futures priced in USDT. The peg does not shift with the stock price. It rides on the gap between the two prices. Two prices, one bet. Ethena also said Binance will give eligible delta-neutral accounts, including its own, lower priority when the exchange has to unwind profitable trades after a liquidation leaves a shortfall, a small but real edge in a crunch.
The market Ethena is chasing
Open interest on Binance's equity perpetual futures topped $2.9 billion and has grown about 105 percent a month through 2026, according to figures Ethena gave in its release and The Block relayed. Public equities dwarf crypto in size. 'Equities trade in the hundreds of trillions of dollars globally,' Young said, arguing more of that trading would move onchain over time. Unchained reported the plan lifts Ethena's addressable collateral from about $2.5 trillion in crypto to more than $150 trillion in public equities. The Block said Binance handled $433.4 billion in traditional-asset perpetual volume in August, about $342.9 billion of it tied to equities.
Shunyet Jan, Binance's head of exchange and trading, said Ethena runs one of the largest systematic strategies in digital assets, according to The Block. Traders moved fast. Ethena's ENA token changed hands near $0.267 on 26 September 2026, up about 19 percent on the day and roughly 57 percent across the week, according to CoinGecko. At the time of its 25 September report, The Block put the same-day rise near 16 percent. CoinGecko also showed the token's market value near $2.7 billion, with 24-hour volume above $1 billion, more than double the level of the day before.
Where the trade could strain
This is not a free ride. It leans on Binance for both legs, the spot stock tokens and the futures hedge, so trouble at one venue would hit both sides at once. A bigger market is not the same as a safer one. Tokenized stocks are also newer and thinner than the shares they track, which can widen the gap Ethena is trying to earn from.
The risk is not hypothetical. USDe fell to $0.9202 on Binance's USDE/USDT pair at about 05:04 UTC on 22 September 2026, then recovered to near $0.9996 within minutes, according to CoinGape. Onchain, aggregators still showed USDe near $0.999, which CoinGape said pointed to a local order-book event and not a hole in the collateral. CoinGape noted USDe now sits inside institutional plumbing as collateral, which raises the stakes if a thin order book ever fed real liquidations. Ethena has not said how much of USDe's backing will move into stocks, or when other exchanges might follow.
What to watch
Watch how much of the $4.9 billion actually shifts into bStocks, and how fast. Funding rates on equity perpetual futures set the payout, and they move around. Ethena said the equity basis has averaged about 3.56 percent a year over six months, according to The Block, so early gains may stay small. Watch Binance too. A single venue holding both legs concentrates the risk, and the 22 September wick showed how quickly its order book can misprice the same asset. Watch the transparency dashboard as well, since that is where outsiders can check the mix rather than take the plan on faith.
Frequently asked
What are Binance bStocks?
bStocks are tokens on Binance that each track a single U.S. stock. Binance says every token is backed one for one by a real share held in custody, and they trade against USDT around the clock. Ethena will hold them as spot collateral for USDe and hedge them with equity futures.
Did USDe lose its peg?
Not in a lasting way. On 22 September 2026 USDe fell to $0.9202 on one Binance trading pair for a few minutes, then returned near $1, according to CoinGape. Onchain price feeds stayed close to $0.999 the whole time. CoinGape called it a local order-book event, not a failure of the collateral.
Why did ENA rise?
Ethena's ENA token climbed after the company said it would back USDe with tokenized stocks on Binance. ENA traded near $0.267 on 26 September 2026, up about 19 percent on the day and roughly 57 percent over the week, according to CoinGecko. Higher backing capacity can lift protocol fees, though that link is not guaranteed.
