Bitcoin heads for third straight monthly gain as September ends

Bitcoin is set to close September higher, its third monthly gain in a row and the first positive September to follow a positive August since 2013. A strong quarter sits behind it, but rising bond yields and an unfinished month leave the run unconfirmed.

Bitcoin is on track to close September higher, near $83,600, its third straight monthly gain. A positive September close would be the first to follow a positive August since 2013, according to CoinDesk.

Those numbers come from CoinDesk's market coverage on 29 September 2026 and from CoinGecko price data. Bitcoin traded at $83,614 at 00:10 UTC on 30 September 2026, per CoinGecko, inside a 24-hour range of $82,796 to $84,486. The month is not closed yet.

The numbers behind the streak

Bitcoin rose about 7 percent in September, CoinDesk reported, after a 25 percent gain in August. That puts the third quarter up more than 40 percent, among its stronger third-quarter runs in years. Add July, and the run stretches to three positive months in a row.

Seasonality is the hook. Since 2013, every positive August had been followed by a weak September, CoinDesk said. A close in the green this month would end that pattern. The last time bitcoin posted gains from July through September, the year was 2012, per an analysis Crowdfund Insider published on 24 September 2026.

Prices had already run hot earlier in the month. Bitcoin briefly touched eight-month highs above $87,000, Crowdfund Insider said, helped by a spot bitcoin ETF inflow day worth close to $1 billion. By 29 September it had cooled. The coin opened at $83,488 that day and traded at $83,961.10 by 7:06 a.m. ET, Yahoo Finance reported, up 7.3 percent over the prior month.

What is pushing the price

Institutional demand kept showing up through the quarter. Spot bitcoin funds drew fresh money on several days, and large buyers stayed active even as the coin traded sideways near $84,000 in late September. Steady inflows, not a single catalyst, carried the move.

Sentiment got a public lift. Brian Armstrong, chief executive of Coinbase, said bitcoin could reach $400,000 by 2030, a figure Yahoo Finance reported he called plausible rather than an official Coinbase forecast. Armstrong framed it as a scenario, not a promise. Forecasts grab headlines.

The case for caution

The macro backdrop is not all calm. The US 10-year Treasury yield sat above 5.2 percent, and the MOVE index, a gauge of bond market swings, held above 100 and near its highs for the year, CoinDesk noted. Rising yields tend to pull cash toward safer assets. Oil traded above $90 a barrel. Gold slipped about 3 percent on Monday to just above $4,000 an ounce.

History is a weak guide. A run of positive months describes the past, not the next print. September could still finish red. The gap between a real trend and a seasonal fluke only closes with time, and the month has hours left. The clock is the story. Not yet.

What to watch

September's close lands at 00:00 UTC on 1 October, and that final print decides whether the streak holds. Traders will watch bond yields next, since a further climb in the 10-year could cap appetite for risk. Two fourth-quarter events could stir volatility, CoinDesk said: a reported November IPO from AI firm Anthropic, which might draw cash toward equities, and the US midterm elections. CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk puts bitcoin's average fourth-quarter gain near 77 percent, though an average is not a forecast.

Frequently asked

Is bitcoin breaking its usual September weakness?

A positive September close on 30 September 2026 would be bitcoin's first to follow a positive August since 2013, according to CoinDesk. September has often been a soft month for the coin. The month has not finished, so the break is not confirmed until the final print on 1 October.

How much has bitcoin gained this quarter?

CoinDesk reported bitcoin was up about 7 percent in September and 25 percent in August, leaving the third quarter more than 40 percent higher. Bitcoin traded near $83,614 at 00:10 UTC on 30 September 2026, according to CoinGecko, inside a 24-hour range of $82,796 to $84,486.

What could go wrong in the fourth quarter?

CoinDesk pointed to rising bond yields, with the US 10-year above 5.2 percent, and a bond volatility gauge near yearly highs. It also flagged a reported November IPO from Anthropic and the US midterm elections as events that could move markets. None of these guarantees a drop, and none rules one out.
