Bitcoin ETFs log biggest daily outflow since June as price slides

US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded their largest daily outflow since June on October 7, pulling $484.9 million as bitcoin dropped to a multi-week low. A jump in oil prices and fresh Middle East tension pushed investors out of riskier bets.

US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds pulled $484.9 million on October 7, their biggest one-day outflow since June. Bitcoin fell to a multi-week low near $82,000 the next morning. A surge in oil prices did much of the damage.

The flow figures come from the tracker Farside Investors, reported by crypto.news on October 8. Fortune and Yahoo Finance recorded the price drop that morning, and CoinGecko put bitcoin near $81,720 by 00:09 UTC on October 9.

Where the money left

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) led the exits with $207.7 million out the door, according to Farside data cited by crypto.news. Fidelity's FBTC lost $105.1 million and the ARK 21Shares fund ARKB shed $101.7 million. Grayscale's GBTC and Bitwise's BITB gave up smaller sums. The selling was broad. The gap between a spot bitcoin ETF and coins held directly shapes how these flows reach the price.

One day reversed the month's gains. The US funds had taken in $321.6 million over October's first four sessions. The October 7 outflow pushed the month to about $163 million in the red, per the same data. Across their life the funds still hold roughly $57.8 billion in net inflows.

Ether funds had it worse. Their outflow streak reached seven sessions through October 7, a combined $568.8 million, led by BlackRock's ETHA. Ether itself fell near $2,475 by early October 9, down almost 4 percent on the day, CoinGecko showed.

What pushed prices down

Oil set this off. Brent crude futures traded at $105.21 a barrel on October 8 as fresh attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and a tropical storm near the US Gulf coast rattled energy markets, Yahoo Finance reported. Higher oil feeds inflation fears. Investors trimmed risk, and bitcoin sits at the risky end of most portfolios.

Fortune put bitcoin at $82,622.04 at 11:00 UTC (7:00 a.m. Eastern) on October 8, about $1,137 below the previous morning. That is down roughly 33 percent from $123,371.34 a year earlier. The drop extended into the next day. By 00:09 UTC on October 9, CoinGecko had bitcoin near $81,720, lower by about 1.8 percent over 24 hours.

A pullback, not yet a trend

Context matters here. The June 25 outflow was bigger at $691.7 million, so October 7 set no record. The funds still hold roughly $57.8 billion in cumulative net inflows, a cushion one weak session barely dents. Bitcoin had already stalled below $87,000 earlier in the week, so Wednesday added to a slide that was already underway.

That oil story has a wrinkle. Fortune noted that bitcoin does not track inflation reports or Federal Reserve moves the way stocks do, which makes a neat oil-to-bitcoin line harder to draw. Neither Fortune nor Yahoo Finance tied the sell-off directly to the ETF withdrawals. The two trends ran together on the same day. That is not the same as one causing the other.

What to watch

Flow trackers update daily, so the next few sessions will show whether October 7 was a blip or the start of a run. Watch whether IBIT keeps bleeding, since it moves the most money. Watch oil too. If Brent cools, the macro pressure that hit risk assets this week may ease. If the Strait of Hormuz stays tense, it may not.

Frequently asked

How much did bitcoin ETFs lose on October 7, 2026?

US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $484.9 million in net outflows on October 7, 2026, their largest single-day withdrawal since June 25, according to Farside Investors data reported by crypto.news. BlackRock's IBIT led with $207.7 million out. The move erased October's earlier inflows and tipped the month to a net outflow.

Why did bitcoin fall this week?

Bitcoin fell as oil prices jumped and investors moved out of riskier assets. Brent crude traded at $105.21 a barrel on October 8, with attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and a US Gulf coast storm adding to supply worries, Yahoo Finance reported. Bitcoin dropped near $82,000 and slid lower into October 9.

Is this the biggest bitcoin ETF outflow ever?

No. The $484.9 million pulled on October 7 was the largest daily outflow since June 25, but that June session was bigger at $691.7 million. The funds also still hold about $57.8 billion in cumulative net inflows, so one weak day leaves the longer record intact.
